Gladys Simon Retires - The Elementary Staff held a retirement party Wednesday May 14 for long time teacher and math coordinator Gladys Simon at Woodland Christian Church. Mrs. Simon graduated from Timpson High School in 1978 and went to Panola Junior College and Stephen F. Austin State University where she received her teaching certificate in elementary and early childhood education. She is married to Ron Simon and they have two adult children, Chaska and Ryan. She is also the very proud grandmother of Courtland and Ashlynn. She has taught in the Timpson School district for 22 years. During her career she has received many honors including being chosen twice by former students as a teacher who made a difference for the Senior Honor Banquet. She was also selected as the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year. She has served on many school committees, the Timpson Library Board and the Shelby County Relay for Life Planning Committee and is active in Wallace Chapel Church in Timpson. She has been actively involved in the Shelby County Relay for Life for many years. Mrs. Simon was instrumental in starting the Timpson Team which participates in Relay for Life. Team Timpson ISD is one of the top fundraisers for the Relay for Life each year. This year they raised over $13,000.00 At the retirement party many of her friends, colleagues, relatives and former students spoke about the positive influence Mrs. Simon has had on their lives. They described her as caring, dedicated, a true friend, a Christian example of how to live, always putting others' needs ahead of her own and how much fun she can be. A video featuring Mrs. Simon througout her years in education, her many travels with family and good friends and her work in the community showed what a rich, fulfilling life she leads. The tables at the reception were beautifully decorated with each one reflecting a different aspect of Mrs. Simon's life including family, friends, school, her faith, her awards and her Relay for Life involvement. Someone once said if it takes the fingers and thumbs on both hands to count the number of those you love and love you then you are indeed blessed. It took the entire Family Life Center to hold the number of people who stood in respect and love for Mrs. Simon when asked to stand if Mrs. Smion has been a positive influence on their lives. Mrs. Simon has battled cancer for the past several years. Yet even during these difficult years she never lost that beautiful smile of hers or the twinkle in her eyes that we all find so uplifting. Mrs. Simon's life is a living example of the John Wesley quote that says:

--------- At all the times you can

--------- To all the people you can

--------- As long as you can."

The staff of Timpson ISD know that even though Mrs. Simon is retiring that because of the positive influence she has had on so many that we will continue to feel her presence and influence in the classrooms and halls of TISD as those she taught teach others the valuable lessons they learned from this outstanding educator.

School Safety Article

In light of the recent school shooting tragedy in Connecticut, Timpson ISD Superintendent Mid Johnson wants to assure parents and community members that the TISD staff have safety plans and procedures in place to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

Despite recent news reports that listed school districts who did not report or were not in compliance with school safety audit reports, Timpson ISD completed the required district audit report on October 3, 2011. The TISD Board of Trustees approved the audit report on November 8, 2011. As a result of the audit, district personnel have addressed areas of concern to better ensure safety of our students including regular safety practice drills, having coordinating safety drills with local and county emergency management personnel, local law enforcement, local ambulance services and the local fire department.

The district has Crisis Management Emergency Procedure Plans in every building and classrooms that explain the procedures to follow in the event of a crisis including fire, tornado, chemical spill, an alleged assailant(s), etc. In addition the district has practice drills for shelter in place, building evacuation and site evacuations so that staff and students will know exactly what to do in case of a crisis. In addition, the district employs an armed security officer. Campus buildings are locked and visitors must be buzzed in to gain admittance. Visitors must remain in the office area and are not allowed in the hallways.

Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the administrative team has met twice with Superintendent Johnson to review all safety procedures including procedures to follow if a person was seen on district property that could pose a threat to student safety. Superintendent Johnson also met with campus secretaries since they are often the first line of defense in a crisis situation. He also met with the entire faculty after school to review the crisis management emergency procedures and stressed that our number one priority in the district is school safety and protection of our students.
